In 1 Corinthians 2:16, Paul quotes Isaiah 40:13 and then makes a statement concerning all believers: “We have the mind of Christ.” Having the mind of Christ means sharing the plan, purpose, and perspective of Christ, and it is something that all believers possess. Having the mind of Christ means we understand God’s plan in the world—to bring glory to Himself, restore creation to its original splendor, and provide salvation for sinners. It means we identify with Christ’s purpose “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). "mood music" ---playlist---what changes your mood--- a song, a person, a situation, a feeling- MOODSWING—defined—an abrupt change of mood----the "mood swing" phenomenon is a common concept used to describe rapidly and intensely fluctuating emotions. People often describe mood swings as a “roller coaster” of feelings from happiness and contentment to anger, irritability, and even depression. ---What mood are you in? Moods are emotions that tend to become FIXED for hours, days, weeks, months...marked by excessive sensitivity and impulsive behavior, unpredictable in behavior, a state of conscious mind or predominant emotion, a fit of anger,receptive state of mind predisposing to action, MOODY: subject to depression, gloomy, temperamental ---Proverbs 4:23 --- get control of your emotions--- ----BEING in the wrong mood--- can cause us to miss opportunities that God has for us—to receive His blessings, His favor, to be His witness to others, to show his compassion, to bring healing and love and salvation, can cause you to miss out on precious moments with friends and family, can cause you to disengage with relationships that need your engagement, can cause you to lose a job or promotion, can cause you to lose a competition, a game, etc, to miss out on the present, to reflect poorly on the past, and to have no hope for the future, it can wreck everything… ---- GOD wants you to have VICTORY over your MOODS… ---WHO or WHAT’s putting you in a BAD MOOD--- when someone disrespects you, when someone doesn’t thank you for what you did for them, when you don’t get your coffee, when your kids are being whack, when your boss or coworkers are getting on your nerves, when you spill something that stains your shirt or dress or clothes, when people show up late to something you planned, when you are late, when traffic is bad, when you don’t get enough sleep a bad day doesn’t have to turn into a bad week, bad month, bad life… feelings are like waves, we get to decide if we’re gonna ride them and how long we choose to ride them… ---Who have you given the keys to your heart and they get to decide what kind of mood you stay in--- WHO have you handed the TITLE DEED of your heart to ? Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. -----The term trauma, meaning “wound,” comes from Greek antiquity. The range of meanings attested at the time includes being severely hurt, physical wounds, wounding, (military) defeat and psychic wounds. Over the centuries, studies of trauma have been part of various disciplines: mental health fields, literature and the arts as well as religion -Proverbs 23:7--- as a man thinks in his heart so is he… the mind directs the life. Traumatic experiences Some research estimates that 60–75%Trusted Source of people in North America experience a traumatic event at some point. The charity Mind in the United Kingdom lists the following as potential causes of trauma: • bullying • harassment • physical, psychological, or sexual abuse • sexual assault • divorce • traffic collisions • childbirth • life threatening illnesses • sudden loss of a loved one • being attacked • being kidnapped • acts of terrorism • natural disasters/ global pandemic • war There are several types of trauma, including: • Acute trauma: This results from a single stressful or dangerous event. • Chronic trauma: This results from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events. It's an idea without an example, an unreachable goal. Perfection leaves no room for priorities, no space for humanness, no time for joy. Striving for it leads to breakdowns, burning out, eating disorders and self-hatred. Here are some common characteristics that are indicators of this battle with perfectionism. Exposing this battleground is necessary to gain further freedom. 1. Do you often avoid trying new things because you do not want others to see that you are not good at them? 2. Do you usually think you should have done things better? 3. Do you put things off because it will take too much time to do them perfectly? Like it says in Ecclesiastes 11:4 “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap” (NIV). In other words, do you procrastinate because you are too busy observing all the challenging and opposing factors? 4. Do you put off tasks because you do not know exactly how to do them perfectly? 5. Do you repeatedly re-live mistakes you have made in public? 6. Do you dislike the idea that you may be just “average” in some area of your life? Do you struggle with contentment in where you are in life? 7. Do you often feel guilty because you do not accomplish the things that you see others doing? 8. Do you feel that you have no purpose in life unless you can make a spectacular performance or contribution in some way? 9. Do you often find yourself focusing on faults in other people or in their work? Do you find yourself often focusing on what others are doing wrong? 10. Do you find it hard to believe compliments because you don’t meet your own standards? 11. Do you miss out on the joy of living today, because you are so busy worrying about whether you will be able to do all the things you are committed to in the future? 12. Do you feel that you won’t be able to get God’s special affection until you “shape up” and meet higher standards for prayer, Bible reading, devotions, and witnessing? 13. Do you feel that keeping your appearance and home immaculate is important to keeping the approval of others or maintaining a sense of peace? 14. Do you have a hard time letting things go, but instead obsess over them? The truth about perfectionism 1) Perfectionism does not make you more successful. 2) Perfectionism does not make you more likable. 3) Perfectionism costs you precious time. 4) Perfectionists frequently feel frustrated, unfulfilled, and inadequate. 5) PERFECTIONISM isn’t possible – and isn’t healthy for our soul 6) Perfectionist thoughts and behaviors can be changed. Take this Scripture as an admonition to treat your wounds appropriately rather than superficially. Get the help you need before the wound further infects you or those around you. Treat deeply what needs treating rather than just giving it the minimal amount of attention needed—hoping it will eventually go away. You’re worth the effort, and God will honor your efforts to get the help you need to heal what is broken in your soul. --PROVERBS 23:7 KJV—as a man thinks so is he… --- THE MIND Is the ENGINE for the LIFE--- it is where ideas, actions, decisions, contemplations, meditations, feelings, desires are all prepared and released… If the Devil plagues your mind, he can direct your behavior! Our English versions will say something like, “he killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab” (2 Sa 23:20). That makes us think, “Oh, yeah. Some guy named Ariel had two sons, and Benaiah killed them.” But OT scholars are still divided on what “sons of Ariel” means. The word Ariel is very similar to the Hebrew word for “lion,” aryeh. The KJV even translates Ariel as “lionlike men.” --- If the word is related to lions, then that makes the passage about Benaiah even more epic: “Benaiah was a mighty man. He killed two heroes that were as strong and brave as lions. Also, the dude killed an actual lion.” -----BEING BOLD means LIVING with a COURAGE that makes you STAND OUT----BURN the SHIPS--- BLAZE NEW TRAILS---LIVE for the APPLAUSE of NAIL SCARRED HANDS --- don’t just talk about the problems, become part of the solution--- grab opportunity by the mane and don’t let go--- live like today is the last day of your life--- don’t let whats wrong with you keep you from worshiping whats right with God--- don’t try to be who you aren’t, be yourself---dare to be different---dare to dream---chase the lions in your life… This is a wake-up call to stop living as if the purpose of life was to simply arrive safely at death. Jesus is hungry, and the tree is not producing fruit as it should. While it is not the season for figs, fig trees would produce small, edible buds before beginning to grow actual figs. A tree that doesn't grow those buds won't later produce full fruit. Seeing that the tree has nothing to offer, and no anticipated harvest, Jesus denounces it ////---JOHN 15:1-5--- producing fruit… ---The church is Gods idea - those planted in the house of the Lord will FLOURISH— Psalms 92:13 - ESV MASSIVE TREES Start as small little seeds... SEED - planted - water - time - sunlight- growth- flourish- It’s God’s will for you and me and our church to flourish! You cannot control the outcome!!! ---Many were taught that faith is a way to control outcomes - do this, pray this, give this and you can expect this!! You can control the outcome - EXCEPT WHEN YOU CANT - see everyone has a Lazarus moment - God will not be manipulated - you cannot manipulate with faith the outcome of your problem - —Faith is a mystery - It is knowing that God can do anything but He won’t do everything - he might do it for someone else in the word and not you- but that requires FAITH to believe beyond your understanding - I don’t get it but God is still good!!! ---We confuse Gods love with proof in circumstantial evidence but Gods proof of love is not based on how I feel his presence but how I deal with feeling his absence - he is God even when I don’t sense god - he’s still on the throne even when I don’t understand - ----I don’t praise him for what he does for me but who He is to me! ----God is not on your schedule and will not be moved just because you get uncomfortable in a situation —— if god really loved you he would- if he had all power he would have - WRONG... — back in those days they didn’t have texts but imagine if they did - basically Jesus read the text and she saw that he read it but never responded!!! What?!!?! Have you ever been left on READ - pic on screen - “Hey God I could really use your help right now- you busy?” - read - 2 days later no response 😬🙃 The disciples were constantly confused about JESUS motives, and doubted the outcome because they hadn’t yet seen the cross, and at the cross they doubted because they hadn’t seen the resurrection--- he’s the God of the outcome—IM NOT--- I need to hear this because all I can do is SOW THE SEED—I cant make the harvest happen… LORD OF THE HARVEST--- represents the result, the seed represents the process-the obedience—I’m the lord of the seed—he’s the lord of the harvest—I decide what I sow, and I decide what I withhold. ---We have the insight of hindsight—the disciples didn’t --- we read with already knowing—they followed without knowing anything… VERSE 35--- JESUS WEPT ---before he spoke the word, he wept---before he demonstrates his authority, he demonstrates his empathy--- I AM WITH YOU WHEN YOU’RE WAITING FOR IT--- I WAS WITH YOU when people couldn’t do it for you--- HE WAS saying I AM WITH YOU in the PAIN.. --Verse 44--- LAZARUS COME OUT--- take off the grave clothes--YOU ARE ALIVE!!! There’s a BIG difference between knowing about Jesus- and actually knowing Jesus- knowing about the healer, the savior, redeemer, and father- and actually knowing Him as YOUR healer, savior, father, friend… ----The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren’t actually interested in following Christ. They want to be close to Jesus to get all the benefits but not so close that it requires anything from them. ----religion keeps us on a treadmill--- weighed down with burdens—bags---rocks—shame---guilt---unworthy---searching and striving to earn his love, his grace, his mercy, his promises-------Treadmill--- if other people are running faster- I have to run faster- performance- the feeling of constantly having to run- When you are planted in performance you are sure to burn out fast- fruit will come but it wont last—Because you are never able to REST because if you’re resting you feel GUILTY- someone else is out there- outperforming you… THIS PRODUCES exhausted Christians, exhausted pastors, exhausted men and women of God… -Mark 6:30-31- come away with me and take a rest… Moving From Religion to Relationship Means: 1---Moving from obligation to gratitude. (I have to vs. I get to---Blessing vs burden—not taking God for granted- or church- or His presence---Story- my son loves going on bike rides with dad- we feed ducks- we pet puppies- we play chase- he says THANK YOU DADDY) 2---Moving from “been there, done that” to “expectancy for so much more.” (Free to experience God in new ways. --No more boxes of familiarity---never arrived, always hungering for more of God) 3---Moving from hypocrisy to honesty. (No more Pretending ---come as you are—God loves it when we get real- get honest- get open- and he does surgery-) 4---Moving from merciless to merciful. (Stripping off a Judgmental spirit and being clothed in Compassion---Grace----receiving it and giving it on a hourly basis) 5---Moving from trusting my ongoing works to resting in His Finished Work. (Humility---keeps us on our knees for God’s mercy & need for His help) 6---Moving from enduring religion to enjoying God. (having fun following Jesus, laughing, smiling, living amazed by his love) These are characteristics of someone in a healthy relationship with God. 7---Moving from control to freedom. (---Free to ask for Help---Allowing Holy Spirit to lead & help me embrace His new ways) 8---Moving from religious rule keeping to grace inspired obedience. (me wanting to honor my parents because of their grace- me wanting to honor my wife because of her grace- we are so much better at doing good when it’s motivated by grace instead of guilt. 9---Moving from Me-centered to JESUS-centered---our identity, our self-worth, our righteousness,-it’s all in JESUS. ---Matt. 11:28-30 (MSG) “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. #JESUSChangesEverything #Sermon #Victory #PaulDaugherty SERMON NOTES Mark 1:10-18 IDENTITY precedes ACTIVITY--- Jesus was focused on IDENTITY TRANSFORMATION not BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION JOHN 4:1-40 ---JESUS is our FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER--- he wants to meet us where we are --- be still --- know that HE IS GOD--- He loves you--- He desires you--- if one person can get HEALED in their FAMILY---- DIRTY WATER creates DEATH FRESH WATER is essential for LIFE… LIVING water is the ultimate life source for the soul and spirit ---JEREMIAH 2:13—NIV--- those who forsake the fountain of living water, will pursue broken cisterns that hold no water at all… ---CISTERN--- artificial manmade well --- rocks and stones cemented together to make the cistern---when it rained, the water collected there and served as a place for people to find water--- but when the masonry cracked the cistern was deemed dirty, worthless, and unusable--- pouring out dirty water--- // many people think their spouse is a broken dirty cistern—and so they leave or blame it all on them… leaky pots -----REDEEMING LOVE----PREFACE--- GET THE BACKSTORY before you JUDGE the BHAVIOR--- everyone has a story that has led them to their current place--- when we love first, we judge less… JESUS ministered to the REAL NEED---not the surface level need---- SURFACE LEVEL HEALING, SURFACE LEVEL SATISFACTION---Jesus always moved past that… !----- JESUS+NOTHING=EVERYTHING YOU NEED. ---John 7:37-38- On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO SHUT THE DOOR ON YOUR OWN THOUGHTS, your OWN FEELINGS, STOP letting EVERY thought through the DOOR of your DECISION MAKING…. 3----STAY in the ROOM LONG ENOUGH for HEALING to HAPPEN---MATTHEW 9:23-30 EXODUS 33:11 ---JESUS stayed in the house til the miracle happened –ELIJAH stayed in the WILDERNESS until GOD had SPOKEN to him— 4---- SHARE your STORY for HIS GLORY --- when it’s the right time, let others know what God has done--- let others know they’re gonna make it—your testimony is not just for your power but for GOD to work in others!!! -Not only is your story powerful to help change others lives- Your story is powerful to keep your changed life- Revelation 12:11- They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony… It’s your weapon against the Devil. When you are feeling low, and tempted to go back to your old life- remind your flesh of your story- you’ve been set free- you’re no longer that girl, that guy- you’re a new creation- Jesus saved you!!
