The Freedom of Forgiveness (2422) Forgiveness yields freedom. Human nature fights against it, but we need God's forgiveness in our Christian life. Sermon Overview Scripture Passage: Ephesians 4:31-32 “To err is human; to forgive is divine.” It is our human nature to make mistakes, but we have to fight hard against our human nature to forgive others. Yet forgiveness is the sole remedy to two very poisonous human conditions: guilt and bitterness. God’s forgiveness of us sets us free from guilt, and our forgiveness of others sets us free from bitterness. God’s nature is to forgive. Therefore, an unforgiving spirit is a terrible thing. An unforgiving spirit does personal harm. It’s not just simply what your unforgiveness does to someone else; it’s what it does to you. If we don’t forgive, we will only know bitterness, and our souls will only know grief. It is not merely missing a blessing; it is a sin. Once we decide to follow Jesus and join the family of God, we must learn to practice forgiveness like our Father. If we don’t, not only do we bring harm to our Christian life, we destroy family fellowship. There is no excuse. But there is help. Adrian Rogers puts it this way: “It is the power of Jesus Christ, who forgave us, that enables us to forgive somebody else. And don’t you insult the grace of God by saying, ‘I can’t forgive.’ You forgive freely. You forgive finally. You forgive fully. And you forgive forcefully.” The same one who has forgiven us is the one who puts His spirit in us and enables us to have the force and the power to forgive. A brother in Christ is a precious thing and a terrible thing to waste. When you forgive, you heal a broken relationship and you gain back a brother. Apply it to your life Have you been wronged? Forgive. Have you been ignored or does it seem as if you are forgotten? Forgive. Is this not the first time? Forgive again. Do not keep score. Forget the math. Forgiveness has no limit. Forgive freely and completely, for their sake, for Jesus’ sake, and for your sake. Adrian Rogers: The Power in the Blood #2170 Sermon Overview Scripture Passage: John 6: 53-57 What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. That’s the way the old hymn goes. It is a powerful truth simply stated: Only the precious blood of Jesus can wash you white as snow. Only the blood of Jesus can make you whole again. But what if that was just the beginning? What if the Power in the Blood of Jesus did more than that? What if it continued its mighty work in our lives after our sins are washed away and we are whole again? Good news! It does. Adrian Rogers said, “Jesus is to your spirit what blood is to your body.” When we become Christians, our hearts pump new blood. We are equipped to live in victory over every circumstance. We are given the opportunity to heal from every heartache. And we are strengthened to bear every burden. It circulates resource after resource including every healing balm, every wise counsel, every drop of grace courses through the veins of our souls, keeping us strong in our faith and spiritually healthy. It is all there. Anything Jesus has overcome, we can overcome. We must learn how to possess the power that is already in our possession. This is what God has already given us through the powerful, wise blood of Jesus. Everything that we need to live the Christian life is in Jesus. Today, we learn how to appropriate this power and transfer it into our own source of strength. Apply it to your life Do you feel weak in your spirit or like there’s a disconnect between the power that was promised and the power you feel in your life? There is a remedy. The blood of Jesus mends the gap. It transforms the source of strength into strength of your own. Jesus tells us in John 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” Let His words abide in you today. Sermon Overview Scripture Passage: 1 Corinthians 12:1 As Christians, our desire should be that our lives count for Jesus. We were not meant to simply sit in church on Sundays and co-exist with other Believers without meaning or purpose. God has called us to serve Him, and how we serve Him is by using our spiritual gifts to serve one another in the Body. As individual members of the Body, we serve different functions, united in the same power. We were meant to live in unity, not in unison. We are not clones or duplicates. Though we are ignited by the same source of strength and power, we are each assigned a specific spiritual gift, each distributed by the Holy Spirit himself. Paul identifies the spiritual gifts in Scripture: wisdom, the gift of knowledge, faith, healing, the gift of miracles, prophecy, discerning spirits, the gift of tongues, the interpretation of tongues, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, ruling, and mercy. We are given our specific gift the day we became born-again Christians, meaning if you are a believer, you already have your gift. You have had it all along, you just have to discover and develop it as you grow as a Believer. We must be careful, however, not to exploit these gifts. The Devil can counterfeit our assigned gifts to lead the unsuspecting Christian astray. The Devil does not use raw material -he works from within our basic knowledge of Scripture and twists it to confuse and discourage. Therefore, our spiritual gifts are not toys -they are our tools, not for our enjoyment, rather, they are for our kingdom employment. You are a gifted child, important to the kingdom. It is necessary to realize your gift, not only for your own relationship with God but for the sake of your church. Apply it to your life If you do not know what your gift is, it does not mean you do not have one. You do. Today, pray that God would reveal it to you and that you would accept whatever he has given to you as a good and grateful steward. You will discover your gift while operating in the Body of Christ -pray that God would show you how you can serve in your church in a way that capitalizes on your spiritual gift.
